The Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) has completed
pre-negotiations with Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) to acquire
three surveillance radars in a deal worth PHP2.6 billion (USD57
million).
"Hopefully within May we can finish formal negotiations because we are really putting priority to this", Philippine Undersecretary of Defence Eduardo Batac said in a news report on 6 May.
The DND is looking to acquire three surveillance radars through a government-to-government deal to monitor disputed areas in the South China Sea.
The acquisition comes as China has increased its military presence in the disputed waters and in the wake of Beijing's efforts to impose fishing restrictions across an area covering approximately 2 million km 2 of the South China Sea's 3.5 million km 2 .
